Rome - June 20, 2025: Domyn and Microsoft announced today that they will partner with the AI Hub for Sustainable Development, with Domyn’s LLMs and applications made available to African innovators across the public and private sectors. This builds on last year’s announcement to develop a first-of-its-kind collaborative platform to support AI-driven industrial growth and local AI ecosystems across Africa. This represents a foundational step toward building a Responsible AI environment that supports innovation and inclusive digital transformation on the continent.
Founder and CEO of Domyn, Uljan Sharka, said, “Domyn is proud to contribute to this initiative that allows the African continent to own its AI destiny. Together with Microsoft, we can bring Domyn’s specific AI expertise to help this ecosystem thrive with Responsible AI.”
Leveraging Domyn’s AI systems and Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry, the AI Hub will explore collaborative efforts to enhance AI accessibility and enable relevant learning resources through a simple, safe and secure AI tool. By integrating AI-powered guidance through a conversational chatbot and streamlined application flows the platform will serve as a one-stop entry point for individuals and organizations interested in building with AI—regardless of their starting point.
“The new AI Hub for Sustainable Development in Rome will expand access to AI through skilling, supporting startups, and accessible computing infrastructure across 14 African nations,” said Brad Smith Vice Chair and President of Microsoft. “What a powerful partnership between the Italian Government, United Nations Development Program, Domyn and Microsoft.”
Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy said, “This initiative is a fundamental piece of a broader mosaic represented by the Mattei Plan. A partnership of equals, as envisioned and pursued by Enrico Mattei, born from the clear vision of our Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and now involving the EU and Africa in a shared effort toward the continent’s economic, social, and environmental growth. We will work together tirelessly to ensure that the AI Hub develops swiftly and efficiently, in the firm belief that this can represent a truly great opportunity for development for the region and for our Europe”.
The AI Hub will direct users to relevant resources and upskilling opportunities while providing readiness assessments to gauge compute and capacity needs. The AI Hub is open to anyone across the continent who would benefit from enhanced access to AI resources, opportunities, and support. The collaboration is fueled by community insights and shaped by local needs, aligning with the vision of the Italy Africa Mattei Plan. Italy is fostering an ecosystem centered around equal partnerships for impact to drive meaningful societal outcomes through the AI Hub.
Currently, Africa hosts less than 1% of the world’s most powerful supercomputers and only 2.1% of global data centers; with cloud adoption in Africa standing at 15%, compared to 71% in Europe. With a shared commitment from UNDP, the AI Hub team, and partner organizations, this marks the beginning of a transformative journey toward accessible, equitable, and impactful AI innovation on the continent.
